Columbia students share thoughts on Letters to Strangers

“As someone who has recently been diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder, this club could be a great opportunity for my own growth as well as provide hope and inspiration to others. I also want to be in a space where others understand mental health and all its impacts” (GS Student)

“I would really like to help people that suffer from anxiety, stress, trauma, etc. Mental health is my #1 priority day-to-day and is something that I strongly believe we all need to cater to in our lives. I really want to assist others with their mental health and receiving a handwritten letter could completely change someone’s day/feelings for the better. I hope I can be a part of this club and carry what I do/learn here to my future practice as a physician’s assistant” (BC Student)”

“I’m very intrigued by the idea. I love the concept presented - a creative outlet to express things that are hard to express day to day, potentially benefiting both the creator and the receiver” (CC Student)”

“I believe this is a great initiative and this could really lift up people who are dealing with some mental struggles and even those who are just having a bad day. I also think that this is an amazing opportunity to grow and develop writing skills and empathy toward others” (GS Student)

“As someone who has struggled with mental health at times, this is something that I would have appreciated. I hope I can write letters to help offer someone else the comfort that I wish I received”(GS Student”

“ Reading a supportive letter from someone is always encouraging, even if you don’t know the writer”(BC Student)

“I think this is a great organization that can make an impact on others who are going through tough times. I find comfort in writing and receiving handwritten letters. It feels more personal than a text or email (GS Student)

“I think it's a great club that I would want to contribute to. Helping someone overcome the challenges they are facing is a great feeling (GS Student)
